Found only in Eph 5:6; 1 Tim. 2:14; Jas. 1:26, the Greek verb “apatao” meant “lead into error” or “deceive.”  Paul said it was Eve instead of Adam who was “deceived” or “led into error” (1 Tim. 2:14).  Those who do not control their speech “deceive” themselves (Jas. 1:26).  False teachers sometimes use empty and meaningless words to “deceive” people.
