Limited to 1 Cor. 9:27, the Greek verb “doulagogeo” meant “bring into bondage.” Paul realized he had a personal responsibility to live the Christian life or he would be classified as one of the unsaved and eternally lost. Paul practiced “manly discipline” (Dictionary of New Testament Theology, 1:647). In 1 Cor. 9:27 he meant, “I pommel my body and subdue it” (ibid).
