Free bad check collection service for school corporations
NorthStar Technologies is a nationwide collection agency that specializes in the collection of bad checks. It offers a "free and easy" returned check collection service to any public or private U.S. educational institution.
NSF (non sufficient funds) checks are submitted to polite but firm collection efforts for 60 days. About 90% of all nsf checks can be collected in this way, and school corporations receive back the full face value of the nsf check plus 25% of a state legislated bad check charge listed in the following box. NorthStar keeps the remaining 75% of the bad check fee to make its service free.

If a nsf check cannot be collected within the 60 day process, or if you
have a closed account or stop payment check, NorthStar offers a FREE
secondary collection service to any educational institution. It will engage in additional
collection efforts for six, twelve, or eighteen months (this selection
is made when signing up). Any checks that go through this
secondary process are returned to school corporations as a 50/50 split
(you receive 50% of the state fee plus 50% of the check's face value).
If your state fee is $20.00 and you had a closed account check for $10,
you would receive $15.00 back at no charge to you because of the state
bad check fee.
