The Greek word hagiazo

The Greek word “hagiazo” is a verb and it occurs in several New Testament books.  Related words are a noun (hagiasmos) and an adjective (hagios).  This term is used a few times in Classical Greek, but it is almost always found in Biblical Greek or Greek somehow influenced by the Bible.

The verb “holy” (hagiazo) means things like “to consecrate” and “sanctify.”  In some cases this “sanctification” was related to a material object such as the temple (Mt. 23:17).  Certianly the saved are to be “holy” (1 Thess. 5:23).  God’s name is to be “holy” (Lk. 11:2) and this “holiness” includes being reverent “in our hearts” (1 Pet. 3:15).
