The Greek word anakrino

Found only in the books of Luke (23:14); Acts (4:9; 12:19; 17:11; 24:8; 28:18); and First Corinthians (2:14, 15; 4:3-4; 9:3; 10:25, 27; 14:24), the Greek verb “anakrino” meant “judge” or “examine.”  In Acts 17:11 this word has the sense of “search.”

This verb describes Pilate’s examination of Jesus (Lk. 23:14) as well as Herod’s examination of some guards after Peter escaped from a prison (Acts 12:19).
