The Greek word anti

Found in several New Testament books, the Greek preposition “anti” means things like “against,” “for,” “because,” on account of,” etc.

Some passages use this preposition to explain something in the sense that a reason is given for it (see Eph. 5:31 for an example of this).  This preposition, as demonstrated by 1 Cor. 11:15, is also used to make comparisons.  A third way this preposition is used is representing the price paid for something when an exchange takes place (see Heb. 12:16 as an example of this).  “Self-sacrifice” (see Mt. 20:28; Mk. 10:45) is also one of the key ideas associated with this term.
