The Greek word “harpage”

Found just three times in the New Testament (Mt. 23:25; Lk. 11:39; Heb. 10:34), the Greek noun “harpage” meant “spoil,” “extort,” or “rob.”  Jesus said Pharisees were guilty of “extortion” (greed), Mt. 23:25.  Greed is also seen in Lk. 11:39.  In Heb. 10:34 this term describes what was illegally taken from God’s people.  Christians have had possessions “plundered” by others.  In Heb. 10:34 this describes the “forcible confiscation of Christian property” (Dictionary of New Testament Theology, 4:604).
