The Greek word “deo”

Found mainly in Matthew-Acts, but also used in Rom. 7:2; 1 Cor. 7:27, 39; Col. 4:3; 2 Tim. 2:9; Rev. 9:14; 20:2, the Greek verb “deo” meant “tie,” “forbid,” “bind.”  Jesus used this word when speaking about the apostles “binding” matters on earth (Mt. 16:19; 18:18).  Jesus also applied this word to a “tied” animal (Mt. 21:2).  The dead were “bound” in grave clothes (Jn. 11:44).  Some Christians were “bound” (Acts 9:2).  Paul associated this word with marriage in 1 Cor. 7:27, 39.  God’s word is not “bound” (2 Tim. 2:9).  John spoke of Satan being “bound” for a “thousand years” (Rev. 20:2).
