The Greek noun “ἐπιστάτης”

Limited to Lk. 5:5; 8:24, 45; 9:33, 49; 17:13, the Greek noun “epistates” meant “master.”  This title is always applied to Jesus and is “principally in miracle stories” (Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament, 2:37).  It also implies the kind of authority to which people submit and obey.  “In the Synoptics the approximate equivalents are ῥαββί, ‎Κύριε, and διδάσκαλε” (ibid).
