The Greek noun “archon”

Found 37 times in the New Testament and used most often in Matthew-Acts, the Greek noun “archon” meant “ruler,” “prince,” “magistrate,” “leader.”  This word can describe civil leaders (Mt. 20:25; Lk. 12:58).  It also describes demonic powers (leaders) in verses like Mt. 9:34; 12:24; Jn. 12:31.  In Rev. 1:5, John applied this term to Jesus; the Lord is “the ruler of the kings of the earth.”
