The Greek word “bathos”

Found only in Mt. 13:5; Mk. 4:5; Lk. 5:4; Rom. 8:39; 11:33; 1 Cor. 2:10; 2 Cor. 8:2; Eph. 3:18; Rev. 2:24, the Greek noun “bathos” meant “depth.”

Jesus knew some have faith which has no “depth” to it (Mt. 13:5; Mk. 4:5) and is thus fruitless. The Lord told Peter to put out into the “deep” on a fishing trip (Lk. 5:4). There is nothing so “deep” that it can separate the saved from God’s love (Rom. 8:39). Things related to God are “deep” (Rom. 11:33; 1 Cor. 2:10; Eph. 3:18). Satan is also associated with some “deep” matters (Rev. 2:24). Some Christians may endure “deep” poverty (2 Cor. 8:2).
