The Greek word axine

Found just twice in the New Testament (Mt. 3:10; Lk. 3:9), the Greek noun “axine” meant “axe.”  John the Baptist, in one of his sermons, said an “axe” was at the “root of the trees.”  This “image stresses the imminence and inevitability of judgment” (Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament, 1:113).
