Found just once in the New Testament (Mt. 27:5), the Greek verb “apanchomai” meant “strangle oneself” or “hang oneself.”  The Septuagint uses this term to describe Ahithophel’s death (2 Sam. 17:23), and the New Testament uses this term to describe the death of Judas.
