The Greek word haplous

Found just twice in the New Testament (Mt. 6:22; Lk. 11:34), the Greek adjective “haplous” meant “single” or “sound.”  Jesus is the only New Testament character to use this term and He associated it with the eye (people are to have a “single” or “healthy” eye).  If people want to be a true follower of Christ, they must pursue single-mindedness and have “unclouded loyalty” (Spicq, 1:171).  God seeks the “simple soul, not parceled out, like that of a small child, oriented exclusively toward God” (ibid).
